Yala National park is a protected nature reserve which is divided into 5 blocks within 130,000 hectares of protected land,, presently there are 2 blocks that are open to visitors. Situated in the South East of the country about 280 km from Colombo. The National Park was established in 1938 and was initially used for a hunting ground for the elite under British rule.
Yala is home to 44 variety of mammals, including the majestic leopards endemic to Sri Lanka, Giant Elephants, Sloth Bear, Sambars, Jackals, Spotted Dear, Peacocks and Crocodiles. Also there are over 215 bird species that can be found in the wetland including Waterfowl (Lesser whistling Duck, Garganey), Cormorants, Large water birds (Grey Heron, Black headed Ibis), Eurasian Spoonbill, Asian Open-bill, Painted Stork, Black necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant. Great White Pelican, Resident spot-billed Pelican are few of the example species.
Yala National Park is a very popular tourist attraction and often described as one of the best wildlife experiences by tourists. There are camping facilities available as well as safaris throughout the park for full day or half days in a Jeep with a professional guide. There are is a good standard of accommodation available close by.
